A History Of Coffee Pods
Coffee pods are a method of making coffee by utilizing a system of placing ground coffee beans into their own paper filters, thereby eliminating the need for a separate filtering system. The original coffee pod maker was launched by a Dutch company under the trademark Senseo in February 2001. Since the launch, Senseo has developed new coffee machines and several different blends and styles of coffee.
Senseo was dogged by court battles in the early years in an attempt to try and defend its patents on the coffee making machine and the coffee pods themselves. Although vigorously defended in court, Senseo lost the case to protect copyright infringement on their coffee pods when a Belgian judge ruled against them in November 2004. The reason for the adverse ruling was that the coffee pod idea had been around well before Senseo had developed their own idea. This is good for the consumer in the sense that there are now several different coffee pods under several different brand names which are available for use in the Senseo coffee machine as well as other machines. Often these pods are much cheaper than the generic brand, especially if bought in large multi packs.
The different blends of coffee which Senseo makes fall into three different categories. There are the original main blends produced by the company. These blends are mild, regular, mocha, and dark roast. Along with the decaffeinated blend of coffee pod, there is also the Kenyan blend and the Colombian blend. The second category contains the flavored pods which Senseo produces. Then there are the specialty coffee pods which can be used with a specialty Senseo machine that was introduced onto the market in 2008. These varieties include the cafe latte, latte macchiato and cappuccino. This Senseo machine is one of the easiest and quickest coffee makers on the market today.
