Next in our vs. series is Keurig vs. Flavia. I was first introduced to Flavia Coffee Makers at my internship my first year of Graduate School. To recap, Keurig is a company of coffee makers and a subsidary of Green Mountain Coffee. Keurig has six different main models that run the gamut in terms of price range and features. The good news is that even the cheapest models, the Keurig Mini and Keurig Elite, coming in at around $60 or $70 in some online and store retailers, produce the same great coffee in the same quick time as the more expensive models, such as the Platinum and the Keurig Breville models. The more expensive models have more features and more customization but all models are known for their ease of use, speed in making coffee and easy cleaning ability. The differences lie in style, design and the size of the water reservoir, as well as intended use. For example, Keurig has a model designed specifically as an office coffee maker that is built to be rugged and withstand a constant bombardment of uses, called the OfficePro.

The coffee maker pods for Keurig are called K Cups. Keurig produces their own wide range of flavors and tastes. In addition, they have partnerships with many popular coffee manufacturers. You can get your Keurig K Cups with Caribou Coffee, Green Mountain, Newman’s Organics, Emeril’s and many others.

Flavia is a coffee maker company by Mars, Incorporated, the same company that makes such candies as M&M’s (Dark chocolate are my absolute favorites) Milky way, Skittles, Snickers and Twix. The coffee, tea and cocoa comes from packets called “Filterpacks”, as apposed to Keurig’s K-cups. The way Filterpacks work is that you place the filterpack inside of the machine and it acts like a brewing chamber. The contents of the filterpack pour directly from the packet into your cup through a common channel, thus avoiding your drink being contaminated by the previously brewed drink, so that your chai doesn’t taste like your Milky Way latte. The filterpacks are tightly sealed in foil, which protects the grounded up coffees and teas from oxygen and moisture, similar to K-Cups.

There are several different Flavia Coffee Maker models, both for home and office, along with some coin operated models. The ones mostly used for the home are the Flavia Fusion and Flavia Fusion Deluxe. The Flavia Fusion and Fusion Deluxe are aesthetically pleasing with stainless steel accents and a graphite body, and Blue LED drink selection lights. It is flexible in cup sizes, has a visible water level on the water tank and a hot water button. For a small office, you could choose between the Flavia Fusion Deluxe or the Flavia SB100. For larger offices, the Flavia Creation 400 is a good option. The prices of Flavia Coffee Machines are between $100-$200. Both the Keurig and Flavia make beverages quickly, are easy to use and are easy to clean.
